Street Organics CAFÉ REVIEW

Carrie Steele drags the hubbie along for a delicious lunch at a fairly new Takapuna vegan-friendly café.

Street Organics opened its doors in Takapuna in January this year, and they’ve already become a firm favourite on ‘the Shore’. Having been impressed on the few visits I had paid them, it was time to give them another whirl with a keen hubby in tow.

Mid-morning on a Saturday it was busy, but with a few tables free – lucky us. While this is not a vegan nor even a solely vegetarian café, there is a strong focus on healthy eating and lots of plant-based dishes. It can definitely be described as ‘vegan-friendly’, including an array of tantalising sweet treats in the cabinet to tempt. The staff are friendly and attentive and the café surroundings fresh and modern, with a really nice vibe.

I ordered the House Made Granola, served with fresh fruit and a choice of milk – I chose almond. The granola was good, if a little too sweet for me, but then I’m not accustomed to sweetened breakfast cereal. I wouldn’t order it again, as there’s other dishes on the menu that would suit me better, but I’m sure if you’re a granola fan and have a sweet tooth, you’ll love it.

I ordered a Chai Latte, with almond milk. I was disappointed that the Dandelion Latte on the online menu wasn’t on the menu in the café, but maybe in future it will be. The chai version was good, but if I’m having a latte then dandelion is definitely my favourite. The café makes a good coffee, and it’s always served with a smile which is a big bonus.

Hubby enjoyed the Big Vegan Breakfast of scrambled tofu, house-made baked beans, mushrooms, grilled tomato and toast. The house-made baked beans are worthy of special mention, insists the other half.

It’s great to have another café in Takapuna where as a vegan, I feel welcome. And as Takapuna is my home patch, it’s doubly appreciated. I understand that Street Organics has plans to introduce Thursday night dinners and a Vegan High Tea, so there’s more to come yet.

Street Organics has hit the ground running and has a strong following already, so the dedicated team are obviously doing a lot right. Go to their website and you can read about this little café’s story, and what they aim to deliver. I doubt there are any locals in Takapuna who don’t know about this place already, or so it seems. I can certainly recommend a leisurely brunch or lunch here, perhaps followed by a walk along one of the nicest beaches in the country, if that’s not too biased a statement?
