Carrie Steele returns to a favourite café, and two years on, she loves it better than ever.
I reviewed Mimosa Café in Takapuna back in 2015. Two years later, it’s as good as ever. Mimosa now has some competition in the ‘vegan friendly’ stakes here in Takapuna, namely Street Organics around the corner, but there is definitely room for both of them, and they each have a different vibe.
Brunch at Mimosa yesterday was Tofu Benedict for hubby, and the Mango Smoothie Bowl for me. The Tofu Benedict sits on a nice seedy bread, and instead of the usual asparagus, there was a layer of mashed edamame beans, which I’m told was very tasty indeed. There’s also thick slices of grilled mushroom, baby spinach, and the most gorgeous looking turmeric hollandaise sauce, smothered over a couple of hefty slices of tofu.
My Mango Smoothie bowl was delightful: a thick, cold smoothy mix, with a few chunks of pineapple, gluten free muesli which was not too sweet, and popped amaranth, all of which added taste and texture to the smoothie mix. There was a lovely cinnamon flavour coming through from the muesli, which came served in a generously sized bowl, topped with shaves of toasted coconut – perfect!
If you plan to visit Mimosa closer to lunchtime, you’ve just got to try the Vegan Ploughman’s Board. It’s a feast for the eyes and the taste buds which includes vegan home-made cheese, walnut mushroom pate and olive tapenade – plus lots more! It will feed two modest eaters, or totally satisfy one very hungry person.
Every time I walk past Mimosa and see the ‘I YVegan’ sign on the window and it makes me smile. I love this café. I would probably come here just for the darling little teapots.
PS: They have new stools at the high tables – and they are very comfy.
