We say: Dosa Plaza is like an Indian vegetarian McDonalds with an absolutely huge menu of just about every type of dosa you could imagine, and more. Bizarre enough to warrant a visit out of sheer curiosity, the items we tried were excellent, and nicely priced. (GS). Gary Steel’s full review can be read here.

They say: “Traditional Gujarati meals, snacks, chaat, traditional meals. Dishes can be modified for vegans.”

We say: “JJK has been a regular hangout for more than two years. I’ve never had a bad meal here, not even an average one in fact. The decor isn’t flash, the timing of the various courses can be hit and miss but the food is excellent. Traditional Gujarati fare with not a conventional “Kiwi-Indian” dish in sight. The khaman is a must have, as is the dabeli (veggie burger), while the pau bhaji is out of this world – best I’ve ever had.” (AK) See Ashley Kramer’s full review here

They say: “Mukunda’s (formerly Govinda’s and Food For Life) is a Hare Krishna-run restaurant offering purely vegan and vegetarian food.”

We say: I end up here regularly, not because the food’s thrilling (it’s not) but because it’s exceptionally good value, healthy and hearty. Just don’t expect much spice, or any garlic/onions. 211 Karangahape Rd, CBD

09 377 7780

Opening hours: Mon-Sat 9am-11pm

They say: “Rasoi is a small Indian cafeteria-style café in central Auckland. A large selection of curries are available and the vegan pie is perfect for those wanting to grab a bite on the run. Rasoi also has a wide range of Indian sweets. Vegan options available.”

We say: The food is kept hot in trays in this thali-based venue, although they also do dosas. It’s lost its mojo over the years and is less impressive than many of the city fringe Indian vegetarian options, but it’s a viable option if stuck for a bite on K’Rd. (GS)

They say: “Roops is an Indian restaurant offering delicious takeaway food that caters specifically to vegetarians and also provides a range of vegan options. Dine in or takeaway, and great value for money.”

We say: Roops’ strength is thalis and masala dosa, neither of which suit taking away. We reckon Roops should concentrate on its restaurant, improving its service and the size of its portions. See our full review here:

They say: “Roops is an Indian restaurant offering delicious takeaway food that caters specifically to vegetarians and also provides a range of vegan options. Dine in or takeaway, and great value for money.”

We say: A sparkling new premises marooned in a bizarre semi-industrial zone in Henderson, Roops offers the same tucker as its Mt Roskill branch. Tasty, but not price or taste-competitive with its best rivals.

They say: “Authentic Indian dine in and takeaway – ‘mother-in-law’s recipe’ – and 100 percent vegetarian”.

We say: The best new Indian cheap eat on the block, with generous and tasty thalis and that rarity of rarities in Indian vegetarian restaurants: friendly, helpful service.” Gary Steel’s in-depth review can be read right here.

They say: “The Bluebird vegetarian café/restaurant is located in the heartland of the culturally diverse inner-city suburb of Mt Eden in Auckland, and specialises in vegetarian and vegan cuisine.”

We say: Pleasant atmosphere with upstairs room, and hearty food that just lacks a bit of spark and adventure, and is perhaps a touch on the pricey side for what you get. (GS)

Touch Of Nature Vegetarian Restaurant

09 263 6999

Opening hours: 12 noon to 2.30pm & 5.30pm to 9.30pm, 7 days.
